Michael Lehutsky is a lifelong resident of Wayne County and 1982 graduate of Western Wayne High School. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Pre-Law with a minor in sociology and criminology, from Penn State University in 1986. In 1989 he obtained his law degree from the Duquesne University School of Law in Pittsburgh where his studies emphasized trial tactics and litigation. While at Duquesne he served as an executive editor of the school’s law review. Upon completing his education Mike returned to Wayne County where he began his legal practice as an associate attorney with the Honesdale firm, Rutherford & Zimmer. He left the firm in early 1994 to start his own solo practice.
In January, 1992 Mike became an Assistant District Attorney for Wayne County. He served as an assistant prosecutor until 2004 when he became District Attorney for Wayne County. Mike served as District Attorney until January 2012. Throughout most of his time as prosecutor, Mike also built and maintained a successful private legal practice which focused on civil litigation, business and corporate law, real estate and estate planning.
During his 20 year career as a prosecutor, Mike worked closely with state and local police officers as well as the Commonwealth’s Office of the Attorney General and the U.S. Attorney’s Office. He worked to re-structure Wayne County’s criminal court system and the Wayne County District Attorney’s office. Mike underwent continuing training for two decades in many aspects of criminal law and procedure including crime scene investigation, search and seizure and forsenics. He prosecuted the full range of crimes from homicides, drug offenses, assaults, property crimes, and drunk driving.
Mike’s community involvement has not been limited to his work as a prosecutor. In 2001 he was elected to Honesdale’s Borough Council. During his time on borough council Mike successfully fought Wayne County’s efforts to place a prison on the site of former elementary school. The case established new precedent for the handling of zoning matters in Wayne County which strengthened the powers of smaller municipalities under their zoning ordinances. Mike has also served a solicitor for several Wayne County municipalities as part of his private legal practice.
Mike was a 20 year member of the Pennsylvania District Attorney’s Association as well as a member and former president of the Honesdale Area Jaycees. He also served as a member of the Board of Directors for the Victims Intervention Program and the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence advocating for the rights of crime victims. He currently serves as a Committee Member for a local Boy Scout Troop.
